I didn’t check the newspaper

today. Is the list of prize bonds

bond. (While smiling)

ADAM

Adam had no faith in lottery luck, and would not, as a rule,

have consented to look at the lists of winning numbers, but

now, as he had nothing else to do and as the newspaper was

before his eyes, he passed his finger downwards along the

column of numbers. And immediately, as though in mockery of

his skepticism, no further than the second line from the top,

his eye was caught by the figure B 27987!

(He is astonished)

CLOSE UP:ADAM’S FACE

Unable to believe his eyes, he hurriedly dropped the paper

on his knees without looking to see the number of the

ticket, and, just as though some one had given him a

douche of cold water, he felt an agreeable chill in the

pit of the stomach; tingling and terrible and sweet! He

stands in anticipation

((above description is a

series of physical action

and has no dialogues in this

part of the scene)

His wife looked at his astonished and panic-stricken

face, and realized that he was not joking. Then she asks

him what is the matter.

SARA

What?.. is number there or not?

ADAM

Sara, B,27987

here!

( he said in a hollow voice.)

SARA

B 27987?

(she asked, turning pale and

dropping the folded

tablecloth on the table)

TWO-SHOT:OF THEM STANDING

LOOKING AT HIS WIFE, ADAM GAVE A BROAD, SENSELESS SMILE,

LIKE A BABY WHEN A BRIGHT OBJECT IS SHOWN IT.

His wife smiled too; it was as pleasant to her as to him

that he only mentioned the series, and did not try to find

out the number of the winning ticket. To torment and

tantalize oneself with hopes of possible fortune is so

sweet, so thrilling!

ADAM

yes these are our series…hopefully

our prize bond might be here

(said Adam, after a long

silence.)

MEDIUM:SHOT OF ADAM’S FACE

SARA

what do you mean hopefully?

SARA

Check it!

ADAM

Okay…,humm

Wait we shouldn’t loose hope that

quickly.

(PESSIMISTICALLY)

ADAM

Second line..the reward money is for

1 million…This is not just money but

power..

Number 279..It will be amazing if we

win the reward money!!

SARA

What?

Adam ignores

(saying this to himself..so he

doesn’t have to be dissapointed

and yet he indulges in

fantacizing)

The husband and wife began laughing and staring at one

another in silence.

MASTER:OF ADAM WALKING

Adam, holding the paper in his hand, walked several times

from corner to corner, and only when he had recovered from

the first impression began dreaming a little.

ADAM

and if we win the prize or life

would change.

But this is your prize bond.If it

were mine..I would buy a

mansion..buy new furniture and pay

the loan ..travel the world and

deposit the rest of the money in

the bank to earn profit.

(Suggests it to his wife)

SARA

yes, property is a brilliant idea

(sitting down and dropping her

hands in her lap.)

somewhere on the beach. . . .. .

ADAM

First we buy a summer resort. It will

surver as a means of income for us

(telling his wife..while smiling )

MASTER:OF SARA AND ADAM TALKING

CLOSE UP:OF THEM TALKING

And pictures came crowding on his imagination, each more

gracious and poetical than the last. And in all these

pictures he saw himself well-fed, serene, healthy, felt

warm, even hot! Here, after eating a fresh fruit coctail,

cold as ice, he lay on his back on the burning sand close

to a stream or in the garden under a lime-tree. . . . It is

hot…

He is digging in the sand or catching ladybirds in the

grass. He dozes sweetly, thinking of nothing, and feeling

all over that he need not go to the office today, tomorrow,

or the day after.

Or, tired of lying still, or watches the peasants catching

fish with a net. When the sun rises he, saunters into the

ocean to bathe and the little fish flit to and fro and

green water-weeds nod their heads. After bathing there is

tea with cream and milk rolls. . . . In the evening a walk

or vint with the neighbors. “Yes, it would be nice to buy

an estate,” said his wife, also dreaming, and from her face

it was evident that she was enchanted by his thoughts.

(He just dreams of lazying

around and doing absolutely

nothing no work to worry about

and no problems to solve)

SARA

yes,buying a property is a

wonderful idea.

(also dreaming, and from her

face it was evident that she

was enchanted by her thoughts.)

CLOSE UP:OF SARA’S FACE

Adam pictured to himself summer festivals , its cold

evenings. At that season he would have to take longer walks

about the garden and beside the beach, so as to get

thoroughly chilled, and then drink a big glass of cola and

eat a salted biscuits or an ice-tea, and then–drink

another. . . .

The wife would come running from the kitchen-garden,

bringing a carrot and a radish smelling of fresh earth. .

. And then, he would lie stretched full length on the sofa,

and in leisurely fashion turn over the pages of some

illustrated magazine, or, covering his face with it and

sitting on a comfy chair in the veranda , give himself up

to slumber.

((Adam looked at his wife with

a long,silent pause and

suggested)

ADAM

I would travel abroad..you know

I’m so fond of the idea of

travelling to foreign countries..

to go abroad somewhere to an exotic location …..oh! may

fort I would go on

vacations ..I’m so fed up of

SARA

Wait wait..!

MASTER:OF SARA ALONE IN THE ROOM

SN # 2. EXT.BALCONY.NIGHT

He walked about the room and went on thinking. It occurred to

him: what if his wife really did go abroad? It is pleasant to

travel alone, or in the society of light, careless women who

live in the present, and not such as think and talk all the

journey about nothing but their children, sigh, and tremble

with dismay over every farthing

Adam imagined his wife in the train with a multitude of

parcels, baskets, and bags; she would be sighing over

something, complaining that the jet made her head ache,

that she had spent so much money…. At the mall he would

continually be having to run for boiling water for her

acheing feet. …

((Adam fears that he might

lose his wife or worse he will

have to bother taking up a job

just to keep their extravagant

lifestyle the way he imagined

it to be))

(Adam in this shot will be

shown as an innocent bystander

just there carrying her

shopping bags,and running for

water,coffee etc while she

shops like crazy)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP:OF ADAM’S FACE

She would bother me for every Ruppy, he thought, with a glance

at his wife and thought selfishly that The prize bond is hers,

not mine! Besides, what is the use of her going abroad? What

does she want there? She would shut herself up in the hotel,

and not let me out of her sight…. I know!

MONTAGE:OF SARA SHOPPING AND DROPPING THINGS

and his wife carrying so many

shopping bags that even she

can’t carry..such as things

falling out of her hands and

looking clumsy)

MEDIUM:SHOT OF ADAM RUNNING TO GET HOT BOILING WATER

(water for her feet for boils)

And for the first time in his life his mind dwelt on the

fact that his wife had grown elderly and plain, and that

she was saturated through and through with the smell of

cooking, while he was still young, fresh, and healthy, and

might well have got married again.

(He imagines her as a monster)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP:OF SARA’S FACE

(face morphing into a monster)

He is still in the balcony thinking selfishly that Sara

will spend all the money on herself and as a husband he’ll

have to bother keeping the job as she will not share the

money so he would much rather grab all the money and find a

prettier young companion for himself)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP: OF ADAM’S FACE

(Smiling)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP:OF ADAM AND ANOTHER WOMAN IN THE CAFE

Of course, all that is silly nonsense, he thought;

but…why should she go abroad? What would she make of it?

And yet she would go, of course…. I can fancy…. In

reality it is all one to her, whether it is Naples or Klin.

She would only be in my way. I should be dependent upon

her. I can fancy how, like a regular woman, she will lock

the money up as soon as she gets it…. She will look after

her relations and grudge me for every penny.

Adam thought of her relations. All those wretched brothers

and sisters and aunts and uncles would come crawling about

as soon as they heard of the winning ticket, would begin

whining like beggars, and fawning upon them with oily,

hypocritical smiles. Wretched, detestable people! If they

were given anything, they would ask for more; while if they

were refused, they would swear at them, slander them, and

wish them every kind of misfortune.

Adam remembered his own relations, and their faces, at

which he had looked impartially in the past, struck him now

as repulsive and hateful.

CLOSE UP: OF ADAM MAKING FACES IN DISGUST

He thought. And his wife’s face, too, struck him as repulsive

and hateful. Anger surged up in his heart against her, and he

thought malignantly: She knows nothing about money, and so she

is stingy. If she won it she would give me a hundred bucks,

and put the rest away under lock and key.

MEDIUM:OF SARA’S BODY AND FACE FATE AND UGLY

And he looked at his wife, not with a smile now, but with

hatred. She glanced at him too, and also with hatred and

anger. She had her own daydreams, her own plans, her own

aspirations. She understood perfectly well what her

husband’s dreams were. She knew who would be the first to

try to grab her winnings.

( this is what her eyes

By now they are so caught up in hopes of winning the money

that they literally start to snatch the newspaper from each

other like little kids and eventually tearing it..But Adam

has the list of drawings..

(this will all be physical

action; they both act like

children trying to snatch the

happens there will be a shot

resentment)

MEDIUM CLOSE UP: OF TEA BUBBLING AND BOILING

Her husband understood her look; hatred began stirring

again in his breast, and in order to annoy his wife he

glanced quickly, to spite her at the fourth page on the

newspaper and read out triumphantly:

Series B Number 27982…not 27987!

Hatred and hope both disappeared at once, and it began

immediately to seem to Adam and his wife that their rooms were

dark and small and low-pitched, that the supper they had been

eating was not doing those good, but lying heavy on their

stomachs, that the evenings were long and wearisome. .

. .because now that they know their fears have come true as

from now on they start spending more and save even lesser than

they used to and they are now both addicted to purchasing

lottery tickets as though it were their life line! The hunger

for fully satisfied life now was long gone!
